Union's Martin, Kurgat named TranSouth runners of the week

JACKSON, Tenn. - 9/27/2010 - Union (Tenn.) University freshman Allison Martin and Edwin Kurgat have been named the TranSouth Conference cross country women's and men's runner of the week respectively. These awards are for the week ending September 26, 2010. This marks the second straight week for Martin and Kurgat to earn the honors.

Martin, a 5-foot-6 freshman from Montrose, Colo., finished as the top runner from the TranSouth in the Memphis Twilight Classic. In the mostly NCAA field, Martin finished 41st of 256 total runners. She posted a time of 18:51 in the 5K event, 1:46 back of the individual champion.

Kurgat, a 5-foot-8 freshman from Eldoret, Kenya finished 19th in the field of 264 runners, made up of mostly NCAA schools. Kurgat's time was 25:03 in the 8K event, 1:48 off the winner's pace. This marks the second straight top-20 finish for Kurgat in NCAA events. He was the top NAIA and TranSouth finisher in the event.

All five TranSouth Conference teams will be in action together on Saturday, Oct. 2 in the Union University Invitational on the campus of Union University.
