No. 1 Union uses fast start record another top-10 win

McKENZIE, Tenn. - 1/6/2011 - The No. 1 Union (Tenn.) University women’s basketball team posted a 77-56 win at No. 10 Bethel (Tenn.) University to open the 2011 TranSouth season. Union improved to 14-0 overall and 1-0 in the TranSouth. Bethel dropped to 11-3 on the season and 0-1 in league play.

The win was Union’s 52nd straight TranSouth regular season win and their 23rd straight road win. It was the 19th straight win for Union dating back to last season. Union is now 7-0 on the season when playing top-10 teams.

Union scored the first four points of the game on their way to a quick 14-5 lead. Union then rolled off a 19-4 run to go up 33-9 with just over four minutes left in the half. Lavanda Ross, in her first game back from surgery, was 7-for-7 from the field for 14 first half points to lead Union. The nation’s second leading scorer in Sarah Chan (27 ppg) for Union had just two points in the first half. Union led 42-23 at the half.

In the second half, Union maintained the double-digit lead as they outscored Bethel 35-33 to take the important road win, 77-56.

Union shot 45 percent from the field and 41 percent (7-17) from behind the arc. Their defense held Bethel to just 27 percent from the field and 19 percent (4-21). In Union’s 14 games on the season, only three teams have managed more than 70 points in a game. Six teams have been held to 59 or less. Union out-rebounded Bethel 46-31. Bethel shot 36 free throws in the game, making 21 for 58 percent. Union was 14-of-16 for 88 percent.

Union was led by Kayla Hudson with a game-high 20 points on 4-of-5 from behind the arc. Ross finished with 18 points, going 9-of-11 from the field. Hope Adams added her fifth double-double on the year with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Chan recorded her seventh double-double on the year at 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Bethel was led by Teena Carter with 20 points. Molly Wallsmith added eight points.

In a milestone watch, Chan is just eight points away from 1,500 career points. Hudson is just seven assists way from 700 in her career.

Up next for Union will be a home conference game on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. versus Martin Methodist (Tenn.).
