Union volleyball signs Arkansas standout Hughes

JACKSON, Tenn. - 1/12/2011 - The Union (Tenn.) University volleyball team has signed Savannah Hughes of Jonesboro, Arkansas to a scholarship. Hughes will enter Union this coming fall as a freshman and will major in Pre-Optometry and Biology as she works to become an optometrist.

Hughes, a 5-foot-10 hitter, prepped at Valley View (Ark.) High School where she played four years of volleyball. She also played eight seasons of volleyball for the Arkansas Junior Olympic program. Hughes helped lead Valley View to the Arkansas 4A State Title in 2008 and 2010. They finished as state runner-up in 2007 and 2009. Hughes was named MVP of the 4A state tournament as a senior. During her career, she was named all-conference, all-state and all-state tournament three times each. Hughes tallied 316 kills and 56 blocks as a senior. As a junior, she recorded 392 kills, 71 blocks, 57 aces and 159 digs, while getting 311 kills, 42 blocks and 42 aces as a sophomore.

Off the court, Hughes was an honors graduate, a member of the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Students, and Health Occupation Students of America.

Hughes is the daughter of Michael and Crystal Hughes of Jonesboro and is a member of the Walnut Street Baptist Church.
