JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/14/2011 - Union (Tenn.) University seniors Kayla Hudson and Micah Gentle were recognized by the Jackson-Madison County Sports Hall of Fame during their award luncheon. Hudson and Gentle were honored as Union’s female and male athletes of the year for the university.
Hudson was a been a four-year starter for the Union women’s basketball team. The Gleason, Tenn. native has helped lead the program through one of the most successful four years in women’s college baseball history. While Hudson has been playing for Union, the team has been ranked No. 1 in every NAIA poll, dating back to the preseason poll of 2007. Union went 143-6 with Hudson as the starting guard, including two NAIA National Titles and four conference titles. During her career, Hudson was named an NAIA All-American, NAIA All-Tournament, and TranSouth All-Conference player on multiple occasions. She was also named the TranSouth Freshman and Newcomer of the Year in her first season at Union, while also earning NAIA and TranSouth Player of the Week honors this season. Hudson became Union’s all-time assists leader in her junior season. She continued to add to that record as a senior and finished with 784 career assists. Hudson also passed the 1,500 career point mark as a senior, scoring 1,776 points. Hudson became the only player in school history with 1,500 points and 700 assists in a career. She holds the Union record for 3-point percentage in a season at 50% (62-124), free throw percentage in a season at .949 (75-79), most assist in a season (257) and most assists in a career (784). Hudson has been named NAIA Scholar Athlete, Capital One CoSIDA District Academic All-American and TranSouth Scholar Athlete during her career. Hudson is majoring in Political Science and after graduation from Union, she will continue as a graduate assistant for the women’s basketball team while she earns her Master’s degree. Hudson hopes to coach and teach at the college level.
Gentle has been a member of the Union golf team for three seasons. He has been a part of two TranSouth Conference Championships teams. He sank a 50-foot eagle putt in the 2010 TranSouth Conference Tournament as a part of Union’s winning score. Micah was also helped the Union team return to the NAIA National Tournament last season for the 11th time in school history, but the first as a team since 1998. Gentle won the Blue Mountain Invitational Tournament title in 2009 and has been one of the top-5 scoring golfers on the Union team over the past two seasons. Since 1999, Gentle’s 2010-11 season ranks fourth best scoring average in the Union record books. His low round of 68 last season ranks fourth best in school history. Gentle also has one of the top-10 lowest tournament scores in Union history. Gentle has been named an NAIA Scholar Athlete and a TranSouth Scholar Athlete on multiple occasions. The Tallassee, Ala. native is a Christian Studies major and Marketing minor.
