Union signs White to soccer scholarship

JACKSON, Tenn. - 7/11/2011 - The Union (Tenn.) University men’s soccer team has signed Daniel White of Vestavia Hills, Ala. to a soccer scholarship. White will enter Union this fall as a freshman and will major in accounting.

Union head coach Clovis Simas says, “It is great to have Daniel on the team. He grew up on the Union soccer field. Daniel is an accomplished young player with many state championships. His work ethic, determination, intensity and skills will be a great asset to our team.”

White, a 5-foot-10 midfielder, prepped at Vestavia Hills (Ala.) High School where he played defensive center for the soccer team. In 2011, his high school team was ranked No. 1 in the nation for over two months by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. That team finished with a 30-1 record.

White was also successful in club soccer. He won four Division I Tennessee Cup titles with the Tennessee Rush Soccer Club, started 32 consecutive games for the Tennessee Olympic Development team, selected by Hawaii Rush to play in the Manchester United Premier Cup, and was a four-year starter in the United State Youth Soccer Association Championship Tournament.

Off the field, White is active in church youth group and served as a small group leader at youth camp.

White is the son of Dr. Darin and Laura White and is a member of Shades Baptist Church in Birmingham.

White’s father is the former Union coach and soccer program founder. Dr. White coached at Union during the beginning of club soccer in 1995. Then moving the program to varsity in 1998, before returning home to Alabama following the 2005 season. White recruited and signed Simas, Union’s current head coach, back in 2002.
