JACKSON, Tenn. - 8/3/2011 - Union (Tenn.) University’s Brett Barry finished in 23rd place in the 96th Annual Tennessee Amateur Championship. The fourth and final round was cancelled due to weather. The Jackson native shot a 69 on Tuesday to hold the lead after round one. He then added a 71 on Wednesday to put Barry in sole possession of first place at the Colonial Country Club (South) in Cordova, Tenn. However, in the third round, Barry shot an 87. Barry had recorded 13 birdies over the first two rounds, but did not have any in round three. Barry went from 4-under to 11-over in the round, dropping from first to a tie for 23rd. After starting the final round, weather stopped play and the round was later cancelled.
Barry, who will be a junior this fall at Union, is coming off a season in which he was named the TranSouth Conference Golfer of the Year. Barry has helped Union to two conference titles in both seasons with the Bulldogs. Barry has also helped lead Union to two straight NAIA National Tournaments.
Barry, a 5-foot-10 former Jackson Christian School standout, captured his player of the year award by winning three tournament titles last season. Barry also posted seven top-5 finishes, including a current four-straight top-5’s. His scoring average is 72.96 in 11 tournaments through 25 rounds. Barry’s posted a 68 on the final round of the conference tournament to help boost the Bulldogs to the title. Barry posted five rounds this season under 70, including three 68’s. He has received TranSouth Golfer of the Week honors twice this season. As a freshman, Barry was a member of the 2010 Union Golf Team that returned to the NAIA National Championship for the first time in 11 years.
