Union women’s basketball adds junior college transfer

JACKSON, Tenn. - 8/9/2011 - The Union (Tenn.) University women’s basketball team has signed Mrashi Karumba for the 2011-12 season. Karumba, a native of London, England will enter Union this fall as a junior.

Union head coach Mark Campbell says, “I saw Mrashi play as a sophomore in high school and never thought we would have a chance to get her. She can play a variety of positions and will make an immediate impact on this year’s team."

Karumba, a 5-foot-10 guard, transferred to Union from Northeastern (Colo.) Junior College where she played basketball for one season. While at Northeastern, Karumba averaged 16 points, seven rebounds and made 55 three pointers at a 42-percent clip. She helped lead her team to a 25-5 record. Karumba was named all-region at Northeastern. Karumba prepped at Greig City Academy in London.

With this signing, Union women’s basketball wraps up their 2011-12 recruiting class. Union has added six players to this year’s team. Joining Karumba in the class is Miranda Tate (Bolingbrook, Ill./Providence College/Bolingbrook HS), Emily Sissom (Woodbury, Tenn./Cannon County HS), Amy Philamlee (Jonesboro, Ark./Valley View HS), Astrid Hutteman (Paraguay), Shelby Ashcraft (Cabot, Ark./Arkansas-Little Rock/Cabot HS).
