Union baseball completes signing class for 2011-12 season

Union baseball has won two of the last three TranSouth
Tournament titles and has participated in three
straight NAIA National Tournament Opening Rounds.

JACKSON, Tenn. - 9/15/2011 - The Union (Tenn.) University baseball team has announced the signing class for the upcoming 2011-12 season. Eight players including Will Irvin, Kody Pinson, Will Embry, Jacob Alexander, Dan Hutcheson, Hunter Smith, John Reed and Logan Wall have all joined Union this fall.

Irvin, a 6-foo-1 senior pitcher from Bolivar, Tenn. transferred in from Auburn (Ala.) University. He was 4-2 in eight appearances, striking out 18 batters in 29.2 innings pitched. Irvin also played two years of junior college ball at Itawamba (Miss.) Community College. In 2010, he went 2-1 with a 3.25 ERA in 36 innings, striking out 23. In 2009, he was 10-1 with 44 strike outs in 68 innings. He was named all-conference and was the winning pitcher of the 2009 JUCO State Championship Game. Irving also hit .350 with 10 home runs and 59 RBI in two seasons at Itawamba.

Pinson, a 6-foot-3 junior first baseman/outfield from Jonesboro, Ark., transferred to Union from Panola College where he hit .308. He played his freshman season at conference foe Lyon (Ark.) where he was named second team all-conference, while hitting .408 with five home runs.

Embry, a 6-foot-3 pitcher, comes to Union after graduating from Brighton (Tenn.) High School. While at Brighton, he played two seasons of baseball. He was named all-district, all-district tournament and was an Academic All-Star. In a game his senior year, Embry recorded 10 consecutive strikeouts on the mound. Embry spent his freshman and sophomore seasons at Tipton Rosemark Academy where he played baseball and football.

Alexander, a 6-foot, 175 lb. shortstop, prepped at North Side (Tenn.) High School where he played baseball, basketball and football. As a starter each season for the baseball team, Alexander played second base, third base, shortstop and pitched for coach Chris Clark and Jason McCauley. He was named a TBCA Super Sophomore, Jackson Sun All-District, all-tournament, all-west Tennessee and TSWA All-State as a sophomore. Following his junior year, he earned all-district, all-tournament, all-region, Tennessee Baseball Report All-State and was the winning pitcher in the district semifinals and finals. Alexander played summer baseball for the KenTenn Xpress American Legion and the APAK All-Stars. Alexander's career totals through his junior season included a .454 batting average, 78 RBI, 137 hits, eight home runs, 112 runs and 30 stolen bases.

Hutcheson, a right-handed pitcher, transferred from Sauk Valley (Ill.) Community College. The junior prepped at Christian Life High School where he also played baseball. Hutchison named team captain and twice earned the Team Ace Award.

Smith, a 6-foot-1 outfielder/pitcher, prepped at the University School of Jackson. Smith played five seasons of baseball for Coach Brad Dyer. He was a three-time all-district, district MVP, all-region, all-state and was twice named all-tournament. He was a Preseason Under Armour All-American and was named a Perfect Game All-American. During his career, Smith hit .403.

Reed, a 5-foot-8 pitcher/outfielder from Windsor, Calif., prepped at Windsor (Calif.) High School where he played four seasons of baseball. Reed was named team captain and was selected to the All-Empire team as a senior.

Wall, a 6-foot first baseman from Jackson, prepped at the University School of Jackson where he played four years of baseball for coach Brad Dyer. Wall was named all-region, all-state and all-tournament at the district level. He was also named to the TSWA All-State team as a senior. Wall his .441 with 41 runs, 54 RBI, six home runs as a senior. He posted a .494 on-base percentage, while slugging at a .678 clip.
