Union women picked to repeat in TranSouth, Ross tabbed as top player

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - 10/31/2011 - The TranSouth Conference released their 2011-12 Women’s Basketball Preseason Coach’s Poll and the Union University Lady Bulldogs have been selected to repeat as champions. In addition to the preseason poll, the conference also named their TranSouth Preseason All-Conference honors. Union’s Lavanda Ross was picked as the preseason player of the year in the league

Union has won five straight TranSouth Regular Season titles and four of the last five tournament titles. Union has also won four NAIA titles in the past seven seasons. Union has made seven straight trips to the national semifinals, including last season’s runner-up finish, denying the Lady Bulldogs a third straight national title.

Union is the NAIA’s No. 2 ranked team in the national preseason poll. This snapped an NAIA record 48 straight polls in which Union was ranked No. 1.

In addition to Ross, Union also placed newcomer Shelby Ashcraft on the preseason all-conference team. Ross, a native of Jackson, is a returning NAIA All-American and first team all-conference player from last season. Ashcraft is a sophomore transfer from the University of Arkansas-Little Rock and is a native of Cabot, Ark.

Union opens their season at home, Tuesday, November 1 at 7:00 p.m. versus Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.).
