Union’s Sims sets career blocks record on senior night

JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/3/2011 - Anna Sims, a senior from Trussville, Ala., needed just one block entering the final home match of her career to tie the Union University career blocks record. Sims recorded three blocks on the night to set a new mark, while helping her team to a senior night victory over Martin Methodist College, 3-0.

Sims became the record holder for blocks in a career with 543 to this point. Sims and the Lady Bulldogs begin postseason tournament play Monday.

The old career record was 541 blocks held by Jackson native Amanda Hutchison Coyle (2005-08). Early this season, Sims passed the 1,000 kills mark and currently has 1,079 career kills to go with her 543 blocks.

Sims has been named to the all-conference team in each of her three seasons to this point.

Sims prepped at Hewitt Trussville High School where she played four seasons of volleyball. She helped lead her team to three straight Area 13 Championships from 2005-2007. In 2006, her squad won the Fairhope Classic Title. As a senior, Sims earned Area 13 All-Tournament, AVBCA second team All-State, Birmingham news All-State, and was Team Captain. Sims was top-10 in kills for the Metro Area and was team leader in kills and blocks. She added Area 13 MVP to her honors as a junior. Sims recorded 3.75 kills per game, 12.5 kills per match, 1.5 blocks per game, and 4.5 blocks per match. Her 374 kills in the season led the metro area for 10 straight weeks. Off the court, Sims was a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, French Club, and was an honor graduate.
