No. 2 Union wins Homecoming game 82-45

JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/5/2011 - No. 2 Union University women’s basketball team posted an 82-45 win over the University of St. Francis (Ill.) on Homecoming 2011. Union improved to 2-0 on the season, while St. Francis dropped to 0-2.

Freshman guard Amy Philamlee led the way for Union with 17 points, filling up the stat sheet by adding six rebounds, six assists and draining three 3-pointers.

Union scored the first six points of the game on three pointers from LaTesa McLaughlin and Paige Parker. Union led by as many as 21 points in the first half, 34-13, before taking a 36-19 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, St. Francis opened with a bucket from Katie Gonnering to cut the deficit down to 15 points. However, Union answered with 10 straight points to lead 46-21. Union extended their lead to as many as 41 points, 67-26 with 8:52 left in the game. Union led by 41 points two more times, before taking the 82-45 final. Union shot 42 percent (5-12) from three point range in the second half.

In addition to Philamlee’s 17 points, Union had four more players reach double-figures including Shelby Ashcraft with 13, McLaughlin with 12, Mrashi Karumba with 11 and Lavanda Ross with 10. Union shot 45 percent from the field, 35 percent (9-26) from behind the arc, and 60 percent (9-15) from the free throw line.

St. Francis was led by Gonnering with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Julie Shiffler added 10 points. The Lady Saints shot 32 percent from the field, 14 percent ( 1-7) from long range, and 75 percent (12-16) form the free throw line.

Up next for Union will be an exhibition game Tuesday, Nov. 8 in Knoxville versus the University of Tennessee at 6:00 p.m. central time.
