JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/19/2011 - In the final game of the 2011 Jackson Rotary Classic, No. 2 Union University women’s basketball rolled past No. 13 Saint Xavier (Ill.) University 74-47. Union improved to 7-0 on the season while Saint Xavier dropped to 4-2 overall.
Union now leads the all-time series with Saint Xavier 4-2 and this marks the first time that either team has won two straight meetings in the series. The win for Union was also their 26th straight home victory dating back to a conference tournament title game loss in 2010.
Union’s defense produced their second lowest point total of the season with the 47 points Saint Xavier scored. Union allowed just 18 first-half points as they pushed out to the 33-18 halftime advantage.
Union has forced their opponents this season into an average of 20 turnovers per game, a .374 field goal percentage, and are allowing just 52.1 points per game on the season.
Senior guard Lavanda Ross again led the way for Union with a game-high 25 points. She was the only Union player in double figures, however, seven other players for Union contributed at least six points. Mildred Olumasi grabbed 10 rebounds. Union shot 45 percent from the field, 35 percent (7-20) from long range, and 65 percent (11-17) from the free throw line.
Union scored the first seven points of the game, not allowing the Cougars first bucket until the 16:38 mark. Union extended their fast start to a 15-3 advantage at the 14:29 mark of the first half. Saint Xavier cut their deficit down to seven points, before Union extended to a 16 point lead at 29-13.
In the second half, Union quickly pushed their 15-point halftime lead out to 21 points, 41-20 at the 16:56 mark following a three pointer from LaTesa McLaughlin. Saint Xavier cut the Union lead down to 13 points twice in the second half, before Union pulled away for their largest lead of the game at the 74-47 final.
Saint Xavier was led by Morgan Stuut with 11 points. The Cougars shot 33 percent from the field, 42 percent (5-12) from behind the arc, and 75 percent (6-8) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be another tough tournament test as the Lady Bulldogs play Oklahoma Baptist University and Oklahoma City University on Friday and Saturday, November 25-26 in Shawnee, Okla.
