No. 3 Union survives trip to Cumberland, 60-57

LEBANON, Tenn. - 1/19/2012 - The No. 3 Union University women’s basketball team earned a tough road win 60-57 at Cumberland University. Union improved to 18-2 on the season and 5-1 in the TranSouth. Cumberland dropped to 5-11 overall and 2-4 in league play.

Both teams shot 50 percent from long range. Union was 9-of-18 from 3-point range, led by Astrid Huttemann with four 3-pointers. Cumberland was 6-of-12 from behind the arc. The game featured nine ties and 15 lead changes.

Union trailed by six points twice in the first half, but managed to rally and force a 28-28 tie at the half. Union freshman Amy Philamlee sank a three pointer in the final minute of the half to tie the game. In the second half, Cumberland and Union swapped baskets early. But Union’s start to the half included back-to-back threes from Huttemann and Rebecca Sharpe. Union took a 37-35 lead at the 17:11 mark and never trailed again. Cumberland tied the game four times in the second half, but never regained the lead.

Union held their largest lead of the game, 51-46 at the 9:34 mark. However, Union went the next seven minutes without a point, allowing Cumberland to eventually tie the game at 51-51 with 3:09 left. Union jumped out again with another 3-pointer from Huttemann before Cumberland tied the game for the final time at 54-54 with 1:58 left. Union’s Lavanda Ross answered with a basket to give Union a 2-point lead. After a couple of missed shots from both teams, Union had the ball with 26 seconds left. Philamlee hit two free throws with 19 seconds left to put Union up by four points. Cumberland was not finished as Tamara Gonzalez sank a 3-pointer with five seconds left. But, Union’s Ross hit both of her free throws with four seconds left and then stole the inbounds pass to seal the 60-57 win.

Union was led by Ross with 14 points. Philamlee and Huttemann each added 12 points, combining for 6-of-9 shooting from behind the arc. Union shot 45 percent from the field, 50 percent (9-18) from long range, and 56 percent (9-16) from the free throw line.

Cumberland was led by Courtney Atkinson with 15 points. Jessica Pace added 12 points and Casie Cowan scored 10 points. Cumberland shot 40 percent from the field, 50 percent (6-12) from 3-point range, and 92 percent (11-12) from the free throw line.

Up next for Union will be another road conference game Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Blue Mountain (Miss.).
