Defense key in No. 3 Union’s win at No. 25 Lyon

Lavanda Ross

BATESVILLE, Ark. - 2/9/2012 - The No. 3 Union University women’s basketball team posted a 67-39 win at No. 25 Lyon College Thursday. Union improved to 23-2 on the season and 10-1 in the TranSouth. Lyon dropped to 18-7 overall and 7-4 in league play.

The 39 points allowed by Union was the second lowest points total allowed on the season (32 vs. Rust, Nov. 29). Union’s defense has been key all season for the Lady Bulldogs as Union has not allowed a team to reach 70 points. The highest total allowed to this point is 69 twice (Oklahoma City, Nov. 29; Martin Methodist, Feb. 4). Union ranks No. 9 in the NAIA with 53 points allowed per game.

Union jumped out to a 31-15 halftime lead, including 12 points from senior All-American Lavanda Ross in the first 20 minutes.

Union forced 21 Lyon turnovers and outrebounded the Scots 33-26. The shooting percentages were similar in the game for both teams, however, Union was able to attempt 58 shots compared to just 39 for Lyon.

Union was led by Ross with 22 points. Shelby Ashcraft added 20 points while Amy Philamlee scored 10 points. Union shot 45 percent from the field, 40 percent (6-15) from behind the arc, and 75 percent (9-12) from the free throw line.

Lyon was led by Lauren Ramsey with 21 points. The Scots shot 44 percent from the field, 50 percent (4-9) from long range, and 17 percent (1-6) from the free throw line.

Up next for Union will be a home game, Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2:00 p.m. versus No. 2 Freed-Hardeman. Union and Freed-Hardeman are both tied at the top of the TranSouth standings with one loss each.
