Union students honored for service to community

JACKSON, Tenn.May 16, 2001 – Union University juniors Rebecca Carlson and Michelle Hardee have each been awarded the Barnabas Leadership Award, which recognizes students who have demonstrated leadership in the area of community and ministry service.

Rebecca CarlsonCarlson, a social work major from Metairie, La., has been active in Backyard Bible Clubs, chapel choir, GO trips, LIFE groups, West Jackson Baptist Church and Greater Hope Baptist Church. A 1998 graduate of Lutheran High School, Carlson is a member of Atonement Lutheran Church in Metairie. She is the daughter of Pat and Elise Carlson.

Michelle HardeeHardee, a marketing major from Bartlett, Tenn., has served at the Carl Perkins Center, for World Changers, Youth and Family Adoption programs and a GO trip to Honduras. A 1998 graduate of Bolton High School, she is a member of Whitten Memorial Baptist Church and the daughter of Phillip and Marina Hardee.

Only juniors with a 2.5 GPA or above are eligible to receive one of the two $1000 awards given each year, in partnership with the Barney II Foundation and Moore Foundation’s Servant Leadership Program. Recipients are awarded $750 and asked to designate $250 to the charitable agency of their choice. A total of thirteen students were nominated and then reviewed by a committee of faculty, staff and students, which then designated the winning recipients.

Other nominees included: Keri Baumgardner of Collierville, Tenn.; Jason Castles of Selmer, Tenn.; Sarah Davenport of Bartlett, Tenn.; Jonathan Gillette of Fairview, Tenn.; Allison Graig of Millington, Tenn.; William Gray of Paris, Tenn.; Jayme Leke of Trenton, Tenn.; Allyson Liberto of Columbia, Tenn.; Scott Marksberry of Plainfield, Ill.; Allison Oshel of Harrisburg, Ill., and Jeremy Rasnic of Charleston, Mo.
