94 students to compete for Union’s top academic scholarships

JACKSON, Tenn.Feb. 28, 2007 – Ninety-four students will participate in Union University’s annual Scholars of Excellence Weekend March 2-3.

The students will be on hand to compete for the highest academic scholarships Union offers. To be invited to the competition, students must score at least a 31 on the ACT, be in the top 15 percent of their graduating class and maintain a minimum 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

All students will earn at least a half-tuition scholarship simply by being invited to participate in the weekend’s activities.

This year’s total of 94 students compares to 60 such students who participated last year.

“We are extremely excited about these excellent students who will be with us this weekend,” Union University President David S. Dockery said. “It is high tribute to the Union faculty that students of this quality hope to attend Union University in the fall of 2007.”

The weekend will consist of dinner with Dockery, social gatherings in the homes of various faculty members, book discussions and interviews.

“We thank God for each student participating in Scholars of Excellence weekend,” said Rich Grimm, Union’s vice president for enrollment services. “This has shaped up to be the largest and most qualified group of scholars that has ever participated in the event. We look forward to hosting them and their families, and to seeing many of them enroll at Union this coming fall.”
