JACKSON, Tenn. – Nov. 19, 2007– Former Union University trustee Wayne Dehoney died Nov. 15 in Louisville, Ky., at age 89.
Dehoney served as pastor of First Baptist Church of Jackson and at Walnut Street Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky. He was a two-term president of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1964-1966.
“Wayne Dehoney was a statesman par excellence among Southern Baptists in the 1960s and the decades thereafter in Southern Baptist life,” Union President David S. Dockery said. “A wonderful preacher who loved the gospel and loved the word of God, Dr. Wayne Dehoney’s legacy will be significant in the churches he served in Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky. For his years of friendship to and support of Union University, we will always be grateful.”
Dehoney’s wife Lealice, a Union University alumnus, died Oct. 23. Wayne Dehoney had an honorary degree from Union and was also honored as trustee emeritus.
The funeral was held Nov. 19 at Walnut Street Baptist Church.
