JACKSON, Tenn.Jan. 23, 2008 – Boston College philosophy professor Jorge L.A. Garcia will address the topic of racism in a Mars Hill Forum lecture Feb. 1 at Union University.

Garcia is the author of the forthcoming book, “The Heart of Racism: Essays on Diversity, Race, and Relativism” and has also written several articles and essays on a wide range of topics in theoretical and applied ethics. He is an advisory board member for the Notre Dame Center for Ethics and Culture and a non-resident fellow with the Du Bois Institute at Harvard University.

The Mars Hill Forum Lectures are an initiative of the Carl F.H. Henry Center for Christian Leadership designed to foster Christian thinking about relevant contemporary issues. Past Mars Hill Forum speakers have included Os Guinness, Ken Myers, C. Ben Mitchell and Wendy Shalit.

“We are honored to host a professional ethicist and scholar of Dr. Garcia’s caliber for this Mars Hill Forum Lecture,” said Justin Barnard, director of the Henry Center. “Dr. Garcia embodies Christian scholarship at its finest, a rigorous intellect animated by charity and humility.

“Very few scholars have thought more deeply than Dr. Garcia about the philosophical nature of racism and its implications for the moral life,” Barnard continued. “He articulates the heart of the problem in a way that touches on both its simplicity and complexity.”

Garcia’s lecture will begin at 3:15 p.m. in Harvey Auditorium in the Barefoot Student Union Building. It is free and open to the public.
