Visiting with the president, from left to right, is Jenny Heineken, a Christian studies major from Pensacola, Fla.; Kayla Haug, an elementary education major from Evansville, Ind., and Josh Howerton, a Biblical studies major from Bowling Green, Ky.

“We are extremely thankful and quite excited about the outstanding quality of this year’s freshman class,” said Union President David S. Dockery. “The high caliber of students and the broad geographical diversity will certainly enrich the life of Union University in the coming years.”

As freshmen lined up to check into their dorms, students, staff and faculty alike turned out to welcome the new students. FOCUS leaders, LIFE group leaders, student ambassadors and others helped the new students move belongings into their dorm rooms and were some of the first faces they saw on campus.

“Everyone seems so nice and friendly here,” said Crystal Surgalski, a freshman from West Frankford, Ill. “I am a little nervous but I am very excited about meeting new people the next few days,” she added.

Lindsey Brown, a freshman from Olive Branch, Miss., has already started to form bonds here at Union. “During our free time my FOCUS leader encouraged us to all attend a church service together. Worshiping together was a neat experience.”

The new freshman class will spend their first four days involved in numerous activities through their FOCUS groups including orientation sessions, an outdoor concert featuring Eclipse and a special game of “Right is the Price,” sponsored by the Student Activities Council.

Also a favorite tradition at Union, the Freshman Variety Show will wrap the orientation week up Tuesday night, with classes beginning for all students on Wednesday, Aug. 29.
