Panel discussion added to Thursday’s conference schedule

JACKSON, Tenn.Oct. 6, 2009 – A Thursday evening panel discussion has been added to the schedule of this week’s “Southern Baptists, Evangelicals, and the Future of Denominationalism” conference at Union University.

The panel discussion on Thursday will begin at 7:45 p.m. following an address by Union University President David S. Dockery, whose message is entitled “So Many Denominations: The Rise and Decline of Denominationalism and the Shaping of a Global Evangelicalism.”

Panel participants will include Greg Thornbury, dean of the School of Christian Studies at Union University; Buddy Gray, pastor of Hunter Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala.; Charles Fowler, senior vice president for university relations at Union; Danny Sinquefield, pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Bartlett, Tenn.; Roland Porter, associate professor of business at Union; George Guthrie, the Benjamin W. Perry Professor of Bible at Union; and Doug Baker, editor of the Baptist Messenger of Oklahoma.

Panel participants will respond to topics from the conference and take questions from the audience.

The conference kicks off this evening with a 5 p.m. address by Ed Stetzer, director of LifeWay Research, on the topic “Denominationalism: Is There a Future?” James Patterson, professor of Christian studies at Union, will speak at 7 p.m. tonight on “Reflections on 400 Years of the Baptist Movement: Who We Are. What We Believe.”

The conference concludes Friday after a 10 a.m. chapel address from R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Union will post audio from a select number of conference addresses this week on the conference Web site at www.uu.edu/events/baptistfuture. Audio from the entire conference will be available at the site a few days after the conference concludes.
