Mentoring Coalition declares April 22 as day of prayer for city’s youth

JACKSON, Tenn.April 19, 2012 – The Mentoring Coalition has declared April 22 as a day of prayer for the city’s youth, according to Union University’s Mary Anne Poe.

The Mentoring Coalition is a group of people committed to the well-being of high-risk young people in the Jackson community. The group is facilitated by the Center for Just and Caring Communities at Union University, which is directed by Poe.

Poe said the group is asking churches to pray “in whatever way is appropriate in the context of their morning worship service.”

“In the wake of poverty, drug and alcohol abuse, violent crime, gang activity and spiritual and cultural uncertainty, the Mentoring Coalition recognizes the power that people of faith can have when joined in concerted prayer and unity around a cause,” Poe said. “The children of a community are its best investment in the future, and all children matter.”

The community is invited to a joint prayer service at City Hall at 3:30 p.m. on April 22. The Tigrett Middle School Gospel Choir will sing, community officials will be present and those in attendance will pray for the community’s peace and prosperity.
