JACKSON, Tenn. – March 14, 2014 – Union University’s Town and Gown Lecture Series will focus on Johann Sebastian Bach’s sacred cantatas with a series of lectures on Tuesday evenings from March 18 – April 22.
The Town and Gown series is an opportunity for community members interested in various topics to attend lectures and participate in discussions in a classroom setting. The sessions are free and open to the public.
The upcoming lectures will reveal how Bach’s beliefs impacted his music, said Joshua Veltman, associate professor of music.
“Bach’s music shows us that intellectual rigor and heartfelt devotion to God are not mutually exclusive but go hand in hand,” Veltman said. “This is an essential lesson at a place like Union that strives for the integration of faith and learning.”
Most sessions will be held in Providence Hall Room 160 from 6-10 p.m., with one lecture on April 15 scheduled to occur in Hartley Recital Hall in Jennings Hall.
The schedule for the series is:
