Union University announces speakers for 2003 Union Forum Series

JACKSON, Tenn.Jan. 17, 2003 – Union University recently announced that the 2003 Union Forum Series will feature writer John Leo and Supreme Court Justice Alan C. Page this spring.

John LeoJohn Leo, a columnist and contributing editor at U.S. News & World Report, will speak on the university’s campus Friday, Feb. 7.

Before joining U.S. News in September 1988, he covered the social sciences, intellectual trends and wrote essays and humor for Time magazine. He also reported on religion for The New York Times. In addition, Leo is a former associate editor of Commonweal magazine, a former book editor of the sociological magazine Society and a former deputy commissioner of New York City’s Environmental Protection Administration.

Alan C. PageMinnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan C. Page will speak at the second Union Forum, Friday, March 14.

Alan C. Page is the state’s first African-American Supreme Court Justice. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, he is well known for his defensive efforts with the Minnesota Vikings, appearing in four Super Bowls and being named All-Pro every year. Completing his career with the Chicago Bears, Page has the distinction of starting every game during his 15 years in the NFL. During the NFL’s off-season Page attended and graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School and began practicing with the firm of Lindquist and Vennum. He was elected to the Minnesota Supreme Court in 1992 and was reelected in 1998.

Designed to provide opportunities for lively conversation with the nation’s leaders and thinkers, the Union Forum brings distinguished speakers each spring. Both luncheons begin at 11:45 a.m. in the university’s Coburn Dining Room. Tickets are $20 per seat and tables of six may still be purchased for one or both events.

This year’s Union Forums are sponsored by First Tennessee Foundation, TLM Associates, West Tennessee Healthcare and The Jackson Sun.
