Two Concentrations Available: Teaching and Learning and Instructional Leadership:
The Master of Education degree (M.Ed.) is designed for the professional development of the classroom teacher. It provides licensed teachers enhancement of their skills and knowledge utilizing the most contemporary of topics in curriculum and instruction.
The Union M.Ed. program accepts students in groups of 15 to 24 to pursue each course together in a cohort. This model emphasizes teamwork, cooperation, professional support and sharing of knowledge among students. Lifelong friendships are developed through this format and learning takes place in a spirit of unity, rigor, and cooperation. The curriculum consists of 12 courses totaling 30 semester hours with no transfer credits or electives permitted.
The face-to-face options in Teaching and Learning and Instructional Leadership begin each June and end in July of the following year,
with the course calendar published in advance for the 14-month program. Except for summer course work, when Saturdays as well as weekdays are utilized, courses during the school year are offered on
Saturdays in a unique delivery system, an intensive format where one course at a time is completed by the cohort of students. Request more information on these campus-based options.
The fully online option in Teaching and Learning begins each August and January, with a 21-month course calendar. An intensive format in which students complete one online course at a time is offered to students in the fully online program.
Students in the M.Ed. program will:
- Enhance their knowledge, skills and values relating to the major issues facing today’s practitioners.
- Be encouraged in their Christian commitment and service to society.
- Apply research skills to current educational problems.
- Prepare for leadership roles in their educational settings.
The Union University Master of Education program provides an iPad for each student, in both face-to-face and fully online programs. The program's cutting edge curriculum utilizes iPad features to assist students in mastering the degree content and showcasing their growth as professionals. Relevant iPad Apps are incorporated into individual course curriculums, and the iMovie App will enable students to compile video portfolios of their pedagogical skills, allowing for a clinically-based experience. iPads are distributed to students in the Teacher Effectiveness course at the beginning of their program, and, upon graduation, the iPads will belong to the students themselves.
Introducing Two New Concentrations
The Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree program is designed to provide relevant educational opportunities for educators to develop as practitioners and educational leaders. The curriculum for the degree, offered in traditional and blended-online formats, as well as fully online for the Teaching and Learning concentration, consists of courses totaling 30 semester hours, with no transfer credits or electives permitted. The M.Ed. has recently been revised to include two new concentrations for maximum depth, relevance, and flexibility.
Teaching and Learning
The M.Ed. with a concentration in Teaching and Learning features relevant courses for today's classroom teacher. The program provides opportunities for continuing professional development for the experienced classroom teacher in the areas of curriculum, instruction, and leadership. Applicants must have a minimum of 1 year teaching experience. Classes are offered in traditional and online formats, with several courses offering a blended technology structure.
The concentration in Instructional Leadership is a licensure curriculum to prepare school principals and curriculum supervisors. This degree provides an opportunity for students to develop their knowledge and skills toward becoming leaders in schools and school districts. Classes are offered in traditional and blended-online formats. Applicants must have completed a minimum of 3 years of teaching prior to starting this degree program. Students completing the Instructional Leadership concentration must successfully pass the state licensure exam to obtain both the M.Ed. degree and state licensure.
