Tampa, Fla.-The 2001 soccer season opened on Wednesday night for the Bulldogs as they fell to the University of Tampa with a 3-1 final. Tampa was preseason ranked No. 25 in NCAA Div. II as they are once again one of the top soccer school in the nation, having won the national championship in 1995.
The game was delayed over an hour because of lightning, but once underway, Tampa wasted no time in scoring their first goal three minutes into the game. Union would score their first goal late in the first half with a corner kick as junior Matt Gladdle assisted freshman Redzi Stojilijkovic for the goal. The game would be tied 1-1 at halftime.
The goalkeepers for both Union and Tampa would dominate the majority of the second half as both teams would fire shot after shot. However, with eight minutes remaining in the game, Tampa scored the decisive goal, and would later add a final goal to put the game away.
Union plays again on Friday in Clearwater, Fla. as they take on Clearwater Christian College at 4:00 p.m. (est).
