Union Athletes Receive Academic Awards

Jackson, Tenn. - 5/16/2002 - Last Wednesday on May 8, the Union family of faculty, staff, and students gathered for awards day and several Union athletes were recognized for their outstanding academic performance. A total of nine athletes earned 12 awards during the ceremony. An Academic Excellence Medal rewards the student with the highest GPA in a particular major or minor.

Five Bulldog sports had representatives in this year’s Awards Day. Senior volleyball player, Sarah Davenport earned three awards on the day. Davenport, from Bartlett, Tenn., received the medal is each of her majors, athletic training and psychology. Davenport also received the Chi Omega Award which is award to a woman in the junior or senior class who distinguishes herself in the behavioral sciences through class contributions and scholastic achievement. Scott Marksberry, a senior soccer player from New York, earned two medals, one in his major of management and the other in his minor of Christian ministries.

Mary Beth Haltom, a senior basketball player from Jackson, earned the excellence medal for her major of history. Senior soccer star, Nicola Barjaktarevic received the medal for physical education. Chanute, Kan., native, and senior baseball player Doug Taylor received the medal for sports management. Misty Depriest, a member of the volleyball team from Elkhart, Ind., earned the excellence medal for sports medicine. Emily VanDam, a volleyball player from Richard, Minn., earned the medal for her minor in international studies. Kiera Knappman, a freshman member of the women’s cross country team received The Chemical Rubber Company Freshman Chemistry Award.

And last but not least, senior softball pitcher Rachel Murray from Herrin, Illinois, received the Fred DeLay Memorial Award which honors the most outstanding senior athlete. Murray had a remarkable four year career at Union as she holds every pitching record at Union. Murray has also been named the NAIA Pitcher of the Year in her career along with tallying over 120 career wins and over 1200 career strikeouts.

Union has produced numerous national scholar athletes over the years and this season is no exception. The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs have earned eight so far this year with four sports yet to announce their national lists.
