Union Ladies Remain Perfect with 110-point Night

JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/16/2007 - The Union University Lady Bulldogs outlasted The Master’s College (Calif.) 110-99 in the battle of ranked teams in the 14th Annual Jackson Rotary Classic. Union, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, improved to 5-0 on the season. The Master’s College Mustangs, ranked No. 19, dropped to 4-1 on the year.

In what was a fast paced, high scoring game throughout, the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a quick lead, scoring the first seven points of the game. The Master’s first score came off a field goal by Jennifer Ayers-Stamper with 17:49 on the clock. The Lady Bulldogs continued to build on their lead, going up by as many as 12 points with 9:50 left in the first half. The Master’s chipped away at Union’s lead to come within four with 4:07 left in the half, but the Lady Bulldog’s stopped the Master’s run to take a 54-46 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Union continued with the same intensity as the first, taking their lead back up to 12 with 17:05 left in the game. Union maintained their lead, going up by as many as 16 points at 83-67 with 8:03 left on the clock. However, just like the previous night, Union’s opponent mounted one final rally. But again Union stopped the rally short as The Master’s pulled as close as five points, 104-99 with 26 second left on a three pointer by Annie Gillespie. Union went 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the final 26 seconds to seal the win at 110-99.

Union was led in scoring by sophomore guard Kaitlin Dudley with 28 points and Crystal Eason with 25 points. Following her career-high 34 points last night, Jospehine Owino posted her third double-double of the season with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman Kayla Hudson and Latoya Bellamy put up 17 and 10 points, respectively. Union’s guard play was key in this win with the combination of Dudley (Gibson County HS), Eason (Scotts Hill HS), and Kayla Hudson (Gleason HS). The three former local high school stars combined for 70 of Union’s 110 points, including 9-of-15 three pointers and 17-of-18 free throws.

Annie Gillespie led The Master’s in scoring with 29 points. Amanda DuRocher added 17 points. Stacy Nanninga and Lisa Chenowoth each posted 12 points, while Jennifer Ayers-Stamper added 10.

The Lady Bulldogs will be in action again tomorrow night in the final game of the Jackson Rotary Classic. They will face No. 2 Vanguard University (Calif.) at 9 pm.
