JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/26/2007 - The No. 1 ranked Union University Lady Bulldogs outlasted a very game Campbellsville University (Ky.) team on Monday night to win 77-73. Union stayed perfect on the season at 8-0. Campbellsville, who received votes in the NAIA preseason rankings, dropped to 4-3 on the season.
The game started very slowly as neither team scored until Union's Josephine Owino got behind the defense for a lay up at the 17:14 mark. Both teams began to heat up as the squads swapped baskets over the next two minutes. The with 12:59 left in the first half, Campbellsville took their biggest lead of the game, 16-12, on a basket by Priscila Alves. Alves, who averages 11 points per game on the year, scored 18 first half points, including 16 of the team's first 18 points.
After a timeout by Union head coach Mark Campbell, Union shook the flat start and posted a 22-4 run to take a 14-point lead (34-20) with 6:40 left in the half. The run was sparked by two three pointers by Crystal Eason and one each by Kayla Hudson and Latorya Bellamy during that stretch. The Lady Bulldogs handled a 14-9 run by Campbellsville to close out the half, leading 43-34.
In the second half, Union extended the lead back to 12 points, 51-39 with 17:08 left in the game and seemed to be pulling away. However, Campbellsville pulled back to within five points (53-48) at the 13:58 mark. Another run by Union pushed the lead back to 13 points (61-48) with 11:32 left in the game. But yet again, Campbellsville came roaring back and over the next nine-plus minutes, the Lady Tigers slowly cut the Union lead down to just two points (65-63) on a three pointer by Alves with 6:08 left. Union would answer with back-to-back baskets by Josephine Owino to increase Union's lead to six points (69-63). Campbellsville cut the Union lead back down to two points twice during the final three minutes, including 75-73 with just 25 second left. Union's Eason missed the front-end of a one-and-one, but an offensive board by Merideth Richardson Jacobs kept Union with possession of the ball. Kaitlin Dudley then sank both free throws with 11 seconds left to help seal the win for Union.
In the game, Union was led by Josephine Owino with 26 points, including 14 in the second half. Kaitlin Dudley tallied 15 points, including 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the game. Crystal Eason tallied 13 points, including 3-of-8 shooting from behind the arc. Freshman guard Kayla Hudson tallied a double-double with 10 points and 13 assists. Union shot 46-percent from the field, 31-percent (8-26) from behind the arc, and 69-percent (9-13) from the free throw line. The Lady Bulldogs pulled down 35 rebounds (eight offensive) and committed 14 turnovers.
Campbellsville was led by Priscilla Alves with 21 points, including 18 in the first half. Melly Heaton put in 14 points, including 4-of-8 from behind the arc. The Lady Tigers shot 45-percent from the field and 71-percent (5-7) from the free throw line. Campbellsville improved on their 27-percent three pointer percentage on the season to sink 42-percent (10-24) in the game, including an impressive 54-percent (7-13) in the second half.
Up next for Union will be a long road trip to Utah where the Lady Bulldogs will play Rocky Mountain College (Mont.) and Westminster University (Utah) in the Westminster Classic in Salt Lake City. Games will be Friday and Saturday, both at 5:00 pm.
