JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/25/2008 - The No. 1 ranked Union University Lady Bulldog improved their season record to 27-0 with a 99-86 win over No. 19 Trevecca Nazarene University (Tenn.). Union, who has already clinched their second TranSouth regular season title, improved to 16-0 in league play. Trevecca Nazarene dropped to 16-10 on the season and 10-6 in the conference.
Union scored first on a basket by junior All-American Joesphine Owino just 15 seconds into the game. Union would not trail in the game. The Lady Bulldogs stretched their biggest first half lead to 12 points at 25-13 with 11:22 left. Trevecca Nazarene pulled to within two points, three different times late in the first half, but could tie the game. Union then closed out the last five minutes of the half with a 17-9 run to take 10-point (47-37) halftime advantage.
In the second half, Union came out of the locker room with a quick 4-0 run to jump up by 14 points. Union slowly and methodically stretched the lead up to 18 points, their largest of the game, at 79-61 with 7:32 left to play. Trevecca Nazarene posted a 16-7 run, to keep the game interesting late as they pulled back to within nine points, 86-77 with just 2:45 left. But on this night, the NAIA’s No. 1 field goal shooting team and the No. 2 three-point shooting team proved to be too much. Union regained control and coasted to the 99-86 win.
Union had five players in double figures led by Kaitlin Dudley, this week’s TranSouth Co-Player of the Week, with 21 points. Josephine Owino added 18 points and Kayla Hudson scored 15 points. Merideth Jacobs posted 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from behind the arc. Jessica Graves added 14 points for Union. The Lady Bulldogs shot 59-percent from the field, including 50-percent (11-22) from behind the arc. Union also sank 28-35 free throws for 80-percent.
Trevecca Nazarene also put five players in double figures paced by Kristin Archie with 20 points. Archie joined Union’s Dudley as the Co-Players of the Week in the TranSouth. Abby Lawson scored 18 points, Mariska Reed added 17 points, Jennifer Bognar posted 13 points, and Christian Gibson added 10 points. Trevecca Nazarene shot 48-percent from the field, 53-percent (10-19) from behind the arc, and 82-percent (18-22) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be a home game on Thursday, February 28 versus Blue Mountain College (Miss.). Senior night for the Union teams will feature the women’s game at 6:00 pm, followed by the men’s game at 8:00 pm.
