JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/12/2008 - The Union University Bulldogs split Saturday's double-header with No. 24 Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University, dropping the first game 2-1. The Bulldogs won the second game by a final score of 6-2. At the end of the series, Union stands at 19-11-1, 8-6-1. The Lions of Freed-Hardeman fall to 27-11, 11-6 on the season.
In game one, Freed-Hardeman scored first going up 1-0 in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by Angel Nicolas. The game progressed quickly, until the Bulldogs answered Freed-Hardeman's run with one of their own in the bottom half of the sixth inning. The Bulldogs posted back-to-back hits, by Andrew Hansen and Allen Williams. Then, with two outs on the board, Cody Willoughby singled to drive in Hansen, knotting up the score at 1-1. The tie was short-lived, however, as the Lions tallied another run in the top of the seventh to go ahead 2-1. The Bulldogs failed to score in their half of the seventh and fell to the Lions by a final score of 2-1.
Game two of the day started just like the first with Freed-Hardeman scoring first on an RBI single. In the Bulldogs half of the first inning, though, Union put up three runs on three hits by Shaun Cozart, Grant Luke, and Judson Powers. The Bulldogs then tacked on one more run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by Cozart, to go up 4-1. The Lions tried to put some offense together in the top half of the third inning, but could only muster one more run. The Bulldog added two more insurance runs, one in fourth inning and another in the sixth to take game two by a final score of 6-2. With the win the Bulldogs took the series with Freed-Hardeman, 2-1.
The Bulldogs were led on the day by Hansen and Powers. In game one Hansen went 2-for-2 with two singles. In game two Hansen went 2-for-3 with two singles. Powers also went 2-for-3 in the second game of the day with a double and a triple. Powers recorded a save on the on the afternoon as well, his fourth this season, with three strikeouts in two innings of work.
The Bulldogs will be on the road this week as they travel to Memphis, Tennessee, Tuesday, April 15, to play a double-header with Christian Brothers (Tenn.) University. Then, they will travel to Lyon (Ark.) College for a three-game conference series with the Scots, April 18-19.
