JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/24/2008 - The Union University Bulldogs remained alive for the second automatic region bid from the TranSouth with a double-header sweep over Crichton (Tenn.) College. Union improves to 23-14-1 on the season and 12-7-1 in the TranSouth. Crichton dropped to 19-29 overall and 7-17 in league play.
With the wins, Union moves into third place in the conference, just percentage points behind second place Lambuth (Tenn.) University. Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University has already clinched the regular season crown and the first automatic region bid. The second place team in the regular season standings will also earn an automatic bid to the region tournament.
In double-header action for Union on Thursday night, Andrew Hansen combined to go 6-for-7 in the two games with three RBI, three runs, and three triples.
In the first game, Union scored first with a run in the third and four more runs in the bottom of the fourth go up 5-0. Crichton added two runs, but never pulled any closer. In addition to Hansen's 3-for-3 game, five other Bulldogs added one hit each in the offensive attack. Senior right-hander Greg Abram (5-2) tossed a complete game, allowing just two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts.
Game two saw junior right-hander Carl Harken (5-3) throw six innings, allowing just two hits and no runs and three strikeouts. Hansen again posted three hits in game two, but was joined by James Brasfield with three hits also and Allen Williams with two hits. Cody Wiloughby added three RBI in the night-cap.
