JACKSON, Tenn. - 9/29/2008 - Wagner Oliveira and James Landham of Union (Tenn.) University have been named the TranSouth Athletic Conference’s men’s soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week respectively for the week ending September 28, 2008.
Oliveira, a senior forward from Ipatinga, Brazil, led the Bulldogs to a 2-0 week by scoring three of the team’s six goals in wins over Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University and No. 21 Mid-Continent (Ky.) University. Against Freed-Hardeman, Oliveira scored the game-winning goal in the 46th minute as Union took a 2-1 victory. Later that week against MCU, he scored twice as the Bulldogs upset the Cougars, 4-2.
Landham, a freshman goalkeeper from Hendersonville, Tenn., contributed to Union’s 2-0 week with eight saves, including six in a win over No. 21 Mid-Continent. He held the Cougars scoreless in the first half as the Bulldogs built a 3-0 lead at intermission.
Union is 5-3-1 on the season and 2-0 in the TranSouth Conference.
Up next for Union will be a home match versus crosstown rival Lambuth University on Tuesday, September 30 at 7:00 pm. The women’s match versus Lambuth will begin at 5:00 pm
