Jackson, Tenn. - 9/24/2002 - Joe Phiri, a senior for the Union University Bulldogs, was named the Student Athlete of the Week by the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). This marks the second consecutive week that a Union Bulldog has received this award, with Adrian Yeung getting this honor the previous week. Phiri helped lead the Union soccer squad to the co-championship of the rain shortened Casey Jones Village Classic last week. Union went 1-0 on the week and improved their overall record to 5-3-1.
Phiri, a 5-foot-7 forward from Lusaka, Zambia, leads the Bulldogs with seven goals and 17 points. He also has tallied three assists on the season. Phiri is Union’s top scorer in school history with over 203 points and 56 goals in just over three and a half years.
The Union University Bulldogs open continue their conference season on Wednesday after noon when they travel to Martin Methodist College. This begins a stretch of five straight conference games for the Bulldogs. Union is currently 1-0 in the TranSouth and look to improve on last season’s runner-up finish in the conference tournament.
