JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/22/2008 - The Union University Lady Bulldog basketball team improved to 9-0 on the season with a 97-61 over No. 6 Azusa Pacific (Calif.) University. The win also was win number 300 for Union Head Coach Mark Campbell. Campbell leads all active NAIA women's basketball coaches with an .875 (300-43) winning percentage. The win for Union capped off a sweep of the three games in the Rotary Classic.
Union has completed three games of a five-game stretch in which all five opponents are ranked in the NAIA Top 25. Union has wins over No. 24 Loyola (La.), No. 13 Saint Xavier (Ill.), and No. 6 Azusa Pacific, with games at No. 16 The Master's (Calf.) and No.2 Vanguard (Calif.) to come next weekend.
In a game where Union never trailed, the game's first four points came from Lady Bulldog junior guard Kaitlin Dudley. Azusa Pacific cut the lead to one point three times early in the first half, but could never take the lead. Union used a quick 13-4 spurt to extend their lead to double figures. As the first half came to an end, Union had extended their lead to the largest of the half at 42-27.
Both teams swapped baskets over the first three minutes of the second half. However, at the 16:47 mark, back-to-back baskets from Josephine Owino, followed by a three pointer from Merideth Jacobs capped off a 7-0 run for Union that pushed their lead to 21 points. From that point, Union kept building a lead, until the final buzzer sounded with Union up by their largest margin of 36 points, 97-61.
Union has reached at least 90 points in eight of their nine games this season.
Union's Dudley led six Lady Bulldogs in double figures with 17 points. Ashley Lilliard added 16 points and 11 rebounds in just 18 minutes of play. Owino and Zeinab Chan added 14 points, Merideth Jacobs scored 11 points, and Christina Ray posted 10 points. Dudley and Jacobs each made three shots from behind the arc as Union only made six three pointers for the game, the lowest total on the season.
Union shot over 60-percent from the field and over 40-percent from behind the arc in the second half of each of the three Rotary Classic games, all wins over NAIA Top-25 teams by an average of 38 points per game.
Azusa Pacific was led in scoring by C.J. Hill with a game-high 20 points. Briana Hall added 15 points and Alex Moore-Porter scored 12 points.
Up next for Union will be two tough road games over the Thanksgiving break. Union will play at No. 16 The Master's (Calif.) College on Friday, November 28. Union will then face off in a No. 1 versus No. 2 battle at Vanguard (Calif.) University on Saturday, November 29.
