Union's Owino named TranSouth Player of the Week

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - 12/1/2008 - Josephine Owino of Union University has been selected as the TranSouth Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, November 30, 2008. Owino was named Co-TranSouth Player of the Week last week.

Owino, a 6-foot-4 senior center from Mombasa, Kenya, led Union to a 2-0 week. The Lady Bulldogs traveled to California and defeated No. 16 The Master's College 85-76 and No. 2 Vanguard University, the defending NAIA Champion, 90-75. The All-American averaged 23 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game. She hit 21-of-31 (68%) shots from the field.

She opened the West Coast trip with a double-double against The Master's with 18 points and 10 rebounds. She had three blocks in the game and hit 9-of-15 from the field. Against Vanguard, she scored 28 points and just missed another double-double with nine rebounds. She hit 12-of-16 from the field.

Owino is averaging 17.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game on the season. She ranks No. 6 in the NAIA with a .664 field goal percentage. On the year, Owino has recorded double-figure points in all 11 games, including a season-high 30 in a win over No. 13 Xavier. She has posted three double-doubles on the year, and has tallied eight or nine rebounds on four other occasions.

Union is currently ranked No.1 in the NAIA Division 1 women's basketball top 25 and are 11-0 on the season. The two-time defending TranSouth Champion Lady Bulldogs will open their conference season on Thursday at home versus Bethel (Tenn.) College. The women will play at 6:00 pm, followed by the men's game at 8:00 pm.
