JACKSON, Tenn. - 1/3/2009 - The No. 1 ranked Union University defeated the No. 6 Lady Eagles of Lambuth University 86-75. With the win, Union moves to 14-1 on the season, while the Lady Eagles fall to 10-4 overall.
The Lady Bulldogs scored first to open the game and never looked back. Union posted a 6-0 run to start the game, but Lambuth quickly made a three pointer to cut Union's lead in half. The two teams continued to swap baskets through the half, with Union slowly pulling away. The Lady Bulldogs drove their lead to 10 points with just under 12 minutes left in the half. Lambuth chipped away at the Lady Bulldogs lead, pulling within one point just two minutes later. Union however, began to stretch their lead again, taking it up to 15 points, 43-28, before settling for a nine-point halftime advantage, 43-34.
The second half continued much like the first with Union recording the first bucket. Union stretched their lead back to 12 points, 46-34, not quite two minutes into the second half, but Lambuth continued to play tough, pulling back within one point near the 13-minute mark, 53-52. The Lady Eagles hung close, tying the game up at 59-59 with just under nine minutes left in the contest. The Lady Bulldogs then stretched their lead out again to as many as 11 points on several occasions. Union took the win by a final score of 86-75.
Union was led on the night by Merideth Jacobs with a game-high 19 points. Kayla Hudson added 14 points for the Lady Bulldogs, while Josephine Owino, Christina Ray, and Lavanda Ross each added 11 points in the victory.
The Lady Eagles were led by Jenee Webb with 16 points. Yolanda Johnson and Chytearra Kintchen added 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Up next for the Lady Bulldogs will be the first home game of 2009 on Thursday, Jan. 8. The Lady Bulldogs play host to conference foe Cumberland (Tenn.) University at 6 pm.
