No. 4 Union holds on to clip Martin Methodist 77-76 in overtime

JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/19/2009 - The No. 4 ranked Union University Bulldogs survived the upset bid of Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College in a 77-76 overtime win at Union's Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union led by six points with one and a half minutes left in regulation, but was outscored 8-2 during down the stretch by Martin Methodist to force overtime.

In the first meeting between these two teams, Union's Brian Lake put back an offensive rebound with six seconds left to give Union the 69-68 win in Pulaski, Tenn.

On this night, it was the visiting team again trying to perform the late game heroics. Martin Methodist guard Aubre Bodison sank two three pointers in the final one minute, 27 seconds to help the RedHawks tie the game. His second came with 31 second left to knot the score at 68-68. Union had the ball for the final shot, but after a busted play, Union's Neaville saw his three pointer fall just short of ending the game in regulation.

In overtime, Union scored the first five points including a three pointer from Neaville and a basket by Greg Truvillion. However, the RedHawks tied the game again at 74-74 on a three pointer from Everett Bills with two minutes left in overtime. Union answered back with their offensive leader as of late when Truvillion converted a three-point-play to put Union back up 77-74 with 1:42 left. That proved to be the last points of the game for Union. After, Bodison sank two free throws with 45 seconds left, Union missed on their attempt to extend the lead. After a time out by the RedHawks with eight seconds left, Bodison missed on a three pointer to win the game, but the rebound was lost out of bounds by Union. With two seconds remaining, Union stole the inbounds pass to seal the one-point win.

Union opened the game with a 7-0 run, however Martin Methodist rallied to lead by as many as five points, 23-18 in the first half. Union rallied to lead 34-28 at halftime.

In the second half, Union stretched their lead to as many as 11 points, 39-28, with a 5-0 run to start the half. Union never trailed, but allowed the RedHawks to tie the game and send it to overtime.

Union was led by the NAIA National Player of the Week Greg Truvillion with 31 points and 10 rebounds. This is Truvillion's fourth straight double-double and eighth of the season. Over the last eight games, Truvillion is averaging 22 points and 12 rebounds per game.

Brian Lake for Union also added his eighth double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Lake was 5-of-7 from behind the arc. Alan North reached double figures for the second time this season with 10 points. Union shot 42-percent from the field, 31-percent (9-29) from behind the arc, and 74-percent (14-19) from the free throw line.

Martin Methodist was led by Aubre Bodison with a game-high 32 points, including 7-of-12 three pointers. Will Shackleford posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The RedHawks shot 36-percent from the field, 42-percent from three-point range (10-24), and 74-percent (14-19) from the free throw line.

Up next for Union will be a road game at No. 14 Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 4:00 pm.
