JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/24/2009 - The Union University Lady Bulldog softball team dropped a pair of games on Tuesday at Fesmire Field to No. 16 Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College 10-2 in six innings, and 14-9 in eight innings. Union is now 4-4 on the season, while Martin Methodist improved to 9-1 on the season.
Union fell behind early as the RedHawks of Martin Methodist scored four quick runs in the top of the fourth inning. A run each for the RedHawks in the second and third innings made it 6-0. Union answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a home run from Ali Thomas. However, Martin Methodist added three more in the fifth and one in the six to run-rule the Lady Bulldogs.
Bethany Burnett (1-2) took the loss, allowing six runs in her three innings of work in the start. Sally Gale (4-1) got the win for the RedHawks.
In game two, Union scored first with a run in the bottom of the first innings. But the lead was short-lived as Martin Methodist added three in the second and one in the third to lead 4-1. Both teams added a run each in the sixth inning, and after a RedHawk run in the top of the seventh, Union trailed 6-2 going into their final at-bat. Union answered with four runs to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh innings with the help of a Kristen Kirk homerun.
In extra innings, Martin Methodist flexed their offensive muscle with eight runs to put the game away. Two home runs for the RedHawks in the frame, sparked by a Maria Robinson grand slam, helped seal the win. Union's three runs in the bottom of the frame fell short. Sydney McMillin (2-1) took the loss for Union, while Nicole Curtis (5-0) earned the win.
Up next for Union will be a home double-header on Saturday, Feb. 28 when William Carey (Miss.) University comes to Fesmire Field at 12:00 pm.
