JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/7/2009 - The No. 6 ranked Union University Bulldogs knocked off Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College in the semifinal round of the TranSouth Conference Tournament 75-68. Union moved to 27-5 on the year and advances to the final round of the conference tournament. This is the eighth appearance for the Bulldogs in TranSouth Conference tournament title games, with Union going 5-2 in the previous seven appearances. Martin Methodist dropped to 22-10 overall.
Brian Lake, who was held scoreless in the first twenty minutes of play, posted 20 points in the second half to help Union pull away for the 75-68 win. Union held a one point advantage at the half, and over the first few minutes of the second half both teams swapped baskets. Martin Methodist began to build a lead as they went up by seven points on two occasions midway through the second half. However, with Union down by six points with nine minutes left, it was the Bulldogs' turn for their first run of the night. Union went on an 11-0 run to go up by five points, 65-60 with just under five minutes to play. Martin Methodist pulled within three points on several occasions over the next few minutes, but Union sealed the 75-68 win with six points from senior forward Brian Lake over the final two minutes of the contest.
The game opened with a basket by Martin Methodist, and throughout the first half, the two teams swapped buckets with neither team able to pull away. The biggest lead for Martin Methodist was three points in the first half. Union's biggest lead was six points over the first 20 minutes of play.
Union was led on the night by Greg Truvillion with 32 points, 18 of which came in the first half. Brian Lake added 20 points in the win, all in the second half. Keith Tolliver recorded 11 points for Union.
Martin Methodist was led by Julius Virgo with 16 points. Mark Mangrum and Marlon Gordon added 13 and 12 points, respectively. Aubre Bodison contributed 11 points for the RedHawks.
Next on the schedule for Union will be a match up versus Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University in the TranSouth Conference Tournament title game. The contest is set for Tuesday, March 10, at 7 pm at Fred DeLay Gymnasium.
