Union's Ralph Turner named NABC-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Coach of the Year

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - 3/18/2009 - The National Association of Basketball Coaches and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has named Union head coach Ralph Turner the 2009 NABC-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year. Turner was recognized at the 72nd Annual Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship Tip-Off Banquet on Tuesday, March 17, in Kansas City, Mo.

Turner notched his 350th career win on January 29, 2009, versus Bethel (Tenn.) College, 97-68. He led the Union University Bulldogs to the TranSouth Athletic Conference tournament championship. In post season play Union recorded wins over Lyon (Ark.), Martin Methodist (Tenn.) and Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.).

Union (28-5) is the No. 3 seed in the 2009 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship and will face University of Science and Arts (Okla.) on Thursday, March 19, at 12:30 p.m. (CT) at Municipal Auditorium.

The 2009 campaign marks Turner’s 15th year as the head coach of the Bulldogs. Coach Turner has led the Bulldogs to 10 NAIA National Tournament appearances.
