JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/17/2009 - The Union University softball team posted a double-header sweep of Lyon (Ark.) College on Friday afternoon. Union needed one extra inning to win 3-2 in the first game, but coasted to a 9-1 win in the second game. Union wins their fourth game in a row, moving to 19-18 overall and 4-2 in the TranSouth. Lyon dropped to 19-18 overall and 5-5 in league play.
Game one saw the visiting Lyon Pipers score first with a run in the top of the second inning. The Pipers held Union scoreless through four innings behind the pitching of Faith Richmond who pitched 7.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits in the hard-luck loss. Union took their first lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, before Lyon tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth. The score remained 2-2 until Union's Ali Thomas doubled to put herself in scoring position in the bottom of the eighth inning. Emily Anthony was called on to pinch run for the hobbled Thomas. Ashley Blakenship played the hero with a game-winning RBI double that scored Anthony. Union was led by Thomas' two hits, while Lindsey Landreneau drove in a team-high two runs. Halie Edwards (9-4) earned the win, tossing eight innings, allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out eight batters.
In game two, Union led from the beginning with a run in the first, followed by three more in the second. Lyon posted their lone tally in the fourth, before Union put four more runs up in the bottom of the fourth. A run in the bottom of the sixth won the game by run-rule, 9-1. Michelle Albonetti and Landreneau each posted three hits, while Landreneau and Blankenship added two RBI each. Sydney McMillin earned the win with six innings of work, allowing one unearned run on six hits while striking out four batters.
Up next for Union will be another conference double-header on Saturday, April 18 at 1:00 pm versus Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University at Union's Fesmire Field.
