Jackson, Tenn. - 10/11/2001 - Union University will be hosting the West Tennessee Collegiate Soccer Cup on Monday, October 15 and Tuesday, October 16. This cup will feature the four local colleges battling for the west Tennessee championship trophy.
The West Tennessee Collegiate Soccer Cup opens up on Monday at 6:00 p.m. with Freed-Hardeman University and Union University followed by Bethel College and Lambuth University at 8:00 p.m. On Tuesday, Freed-Hardeman and Lambuth will play at 6:00 p.m. and Bethel and Union at 8:00 p.m. The winner will be awarded the first annual West Tennessee Collegiate Soccer Cup trophy sponsored by Madison Lighting & Interiors and Boise Cascade. In case of a tie at the end, a point system will determine the tournament champion.
This will mark the first time that all four college soccer programs will play in one tournament for a local championship. Union’s coach Dr. Darin White states, “This will be a festive tournament to celebrate the sport of soccer, but also be a showcase for the local colleges to perform in front of a large crowd in a tournament atmosphere.” White goes on to say, “Soccer is the fastest growing youth sport in America with over 80 million people playing soccer in the U.S.”. Soccer in Jackson has seen a tremendous growth in the last five years. Union, Freed-Hardeman, and Bethel have all started varsity programs in the last five years, with Lambuth starting their program in 1992, and the same is true with many of the high schools in the area. White hopes to make this a yearly event that the entire soccer community can get involved in.
Union comes into this event having just clinched a spot in the TranSouth Conference Tournament with a win over Freed-Hardeman last Monday. Emotions will be high for all participating which should provide some entertaining soccer for fans all over west Tennessee. The admission is free for this event there will be Dande Jumpers on site for the kids to enjoy.
