Union softball sweeps Cumberland on Senior Day

JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/25/2009 - The Union University Lady Bulldogs swept their season series over Cumberland (Tenn.) University on Senior Day. Union won the first game 4-0 and took game two 9-1 in six innings. With the pair of wins, Union completes the regular season 24-21, posting a 9-5 record in TranSouth play. With the losses, Cumberland completes the regular season 6-30 and 1-13 in league play.

Union started Senior Day off right in the first game, posting two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The game proceeded quietly, until Union tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, to take a 4-0 lead. Union held Cumberland scoreless for the last three innings, to win 4-0.

Union was led at the plate by Lindsey Landreneau who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Michelle Albonetti, Ashley Blankenship, and Katie Davis each added a hit in the Lady Bulldog's victory.

Hailee Edwards tossed the win, throwing a complete game shut out, giving up only three hits and striking out three. Edwards completes the regular season with a 12-5 record.

Game two started quietly, before Union got their bats going again. The Lady Bulldogs posted three runs in the bottom of the third inning on five hits, and then added three more in their half of the fourth on four hits, to go up 6-0. Union then added one more run in their frame of the fifth inning, to lead Cumberland 7-0. Cumberland began a rally in the top of the sixth inning, but only managed to push one run across the plate. Then in the bottom of the sixth the Lady Bulldogs scored two more runs, to win in six innings, 9-1.

Ashley Blankenship led the charge for the Lady Bulldogs in game two, going 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Katie Davis also had three hits for Union with two RBI and two runs scored. Ali Thomas and Lindsey Landreneau also drove in two runs each in the win.

Sydney McMillin got the win for the Lady Bulldogs, throwing a complete game, giving up only one run on five hits. McMillin completes the regular season 11-8.

Up next for the Lady Bulldogs will be the TranSouth Conference Tournament in Pulaski, Tenn., April 29 - May 1, at North End Park.
