Jackson, Tenn. - 11/5/2002 - Robert Stinson, a freshmen from Dickson, Tennessee, has been named the NCCAA Player of the Week in men’s soccer. Stinson, the starting goalie for Union University, helped Union to a 1-0 week as the Bulldogs defeated No. 16 Lambuth University 1-0 in the fourth annual Jackson Cup.
Stinson started the 2002 season as the Bulldogs’ second string goal keeper, but with injuries to a once NAIA honorable mentioned goalie, Jeff Lean, Stinson had to play early and he hasn’t disappointed. Now the former Dickson County High School star has earned the starting role and he has proven that he can play with the best. In the shutout win over Lambuth, Stinson recorded seven saves. On the year, he has played in 12 games and has a 1.18 goals against average. Stinson, a 5-foot-11 155 1b freshman, has 54 saves for a .818 save percentage.
On Tuesday Nov. 5, the Bulldogs opened play in the TranSouth Conference Tournament. Union, the No. 6 seed lost the quarterfinal game to No. 3 Berry College by the score of 5-1. The Bulldogs are now 11-8-1 on the season and have been eliminated from the NAIA postseason. Now the Bulldogs will battle for the NCCAA MidEast Region Championship in hopes of moving on to the NCCAA National Tournament on November 22.
