Junior college volleyball standout transfers to Union

Marcela Madeira

JACKSON, Tenn. - 5/22/2009 - The Union University volleyball program has signed Marcela Madeira to continue her volleyball career at with the Lady Bulldog in the fall of 2009. The Vitoria, Brazil native will enter Union this fall as a junior.

“Marcela is an outstanding player who will add a dominant presence to our offense and defense,” says Union Head Coach Steven Gream. “Marcela is an outstanding all around player. She is that five-tool player who can play at a high level. We are excited to have her as a part of our program at Union.”

Madeira, a 5-foot-10 hitter, transferred to Union from Jefferson (Mo.) Community College where she played two years of volleyball. In 2008, her team finished the season ranked No. 12 in the nation, after being ranked as high as No. 8. Madeira was named All-Conference and All-Region twice at Jefferson and was also an Academic All-Region performer. In her two seasons at Jefferson, Madeira totaled 644 kills (2.9/g), 555 digs (2.4/g), and 58 aces.

Madeira is the daughter of Jose and Lucia Madeira of Brazil.
