JACKSON, Tenn. - 10/22/2009 - The Union University Lady Bulldog soccer team posted a milestone win with a 1-0 victory of Bethel (Tenn.) University. This marked the first win over Bethel in seven matches, spanning the five-year history of the Union women’s soccer program. Union improved to 7-5-2 on the season and 2-1-1 in the TranSouth. Bethel dropped to 3-4-3 overall and 2-1-2 in league play.
In a slight on-and-off drizzle, Union and Bethel played a slow first half with neither team able to produce many scoring opportunities. However, it was Union that broke through first with a goal from Eboni Murphy with just under two minutes left to play in the half. Jill Landers recorded the assist.
Union took that 1-0 lead and held off numerous Bethel scoring threats in the second half to hold on for the win. Bethel outshot Union 8-0 in the second half, 14-2 in the match, and 7-2 in shots-on-goal. Union’s Laura Pla recorded seven saves in the match including a one-handed save inside ten minutes remaining to help secure the shutout.
Bethel’s Jackie Gardner recorded a save in her 90 minutes of work between the posts. Maryse Beauregard and Marika Fukuta led Bethel with four and three shots respectively.
Up next for Union will be another TranSouth Conference match when the Lady Bulldogs travel to Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University for a 5:00 p.m. match.
