LEBANON, Ill. - 11/14/2009 - The No. 11 ranked Union (Tenn.) University men’s basketball team posted a 66-64 road win at No. 5 McKendree (Ill.) University on Saturday night. For Union, this marked the third straight season that Union has won at McKendree. The Bulldogs improved to 3-1 on the season, while McKendree dropped to 5-1 on the year.
Union’s senior All-American Greg Truvillion, who posted his second straight double-double, hit the game winning three-pointer with four seconds left to give Union the victory.
Union led by five points, 63-58 with 50 seconds left in the game. But a three pointer by McKendree’s Eric Hobbie, followed by a Union turnover and a three-point-play, put the home team up by one point with 31 seconds left. Union worked the clock down and when it looked as if the Bulldogs would not get a shot off, Truvillion drained his first three pointer of the season for the win.
McKendree led by as many as nine points with 15 minutes left in the game after the teams played to a 29-29 halftime tie. However, Union slowly chipped away and posted their biggest lead of five points on two occasions in the final four minutes.
The game featured six ties and 11 lead changes, which as becoming a regular occurrence when these two teams meet. Last season, Union and McKendree split the season series 1-1 with Union winning 83-80 in overtime at McKendree, while McKendree topped Union 66-65 at Union. These two teams will meet for a rematch in two weeks in the Union Thanksgiving Classic.
Union was led by Truvillion with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Tacuma Alexander was the only other Bulldog in double figures with 12 points. After dismal first half shooting numbers, Union made 62 percent of their shots in the second half, including 75 percent (3-4) of their three pointers. For the game, Union shot 46 percent from the field, 42 percent (5-12) from behind the arc and 77 percent (17-22) from the free throw line.
McKendree was led by Eric Hobbie with 17 points. Sean Rakers added 16 points and John Steppe scored 10 points. The Bearcats shot 53 percent from the field, 33 percent (4-12) from behind the arc and 50 percent (6-12) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be another matchup with a team that is receiving votes in the NAIA preseason ranking as Union hosts Campbellsville (Ky.) on Tuesday, November 17 at 7:00 p.m.
