JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/21/2009 - In the final game of the 2009 Jackson Rotary Classic, Union pulled away from No. 25 Biola (Calif.) University with 66-45 win on Saturday night. No. 1 Union improved to 7-0 on the season, while Biola dropped to 0-3 overall.
This marked the third win of the season for Union over a team ranked in the NAIA top 25. Of the seven wins for Union, six have come against teams either ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA preseason rankings.
Union jumped out to a quick 10-4 lead over the first five minutes. However, Biola rallied with a 20-10 run to take a four point lead, 24-20 at the 6:33 mark of the first half.
Over the next six minutes, Union posted a 15-0 run to lead 35-24, before settling for the 35-27 halftime lead.
In the second half, Union pushed their lead to double figures were it stayed for the rest of the game. The 66-45 lead at the end of the game marked the largest lead of the game for Union.
On a night after Union lit up the scoreboard with 15 three pointers, the Lady Bulldogs managed just 36-percent shooting from the field, including just 21 percent (4-19) from behind the arc. Union did made 14-of-17 free throws for 84 percent.
Union’s defense helped pick up the offense allowing just 45 points in the game, the second lowest total of the season.
Union was led by Zeinab Chan with 20 points. Ashley Lillard recorded her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Kaitlin Dudley and Lavanda Ross each added 11 points.
Biola was led by Jessilyn Conicelli with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Riche Kater added 10 points for the Eagles. Biola shot 30 percent for the game, 19 percent (4-21) from behind the arc and 78 percent (7-9) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be two games in the Lambuth (Tenn.) Thanksgiving Classic on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 27-28. Union plays No. 7 St. Xavier (Ill.) on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and then No. 21 Loyola (La.) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
