DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - 12/29/2009 - The top ranked Union (Tenn.) University Lady Bulldogs pushed their winning streak to six games with a 76-57 win over Brenau (Ga.) University in the final day of the Daytona Beach Shootout. Union improved to 13-1 on the season, while Brenau dropped to 7-4 overall.
Union extended their 11 point halftime lead to as many as 24 points in the second half, 70-46 with 4:28 left in the game.
The second half started with Brenau scoring four of the first five points to cut the lead down to eight points. However, Union answered with an 8-0 run to pushed the lead back to double figures. Union’s Kaitlin Dudley, scored 11 of her game-high 18 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half to spark the Lady Bulldogs.
After Union stretched their lead to 24 points late in the contest, Brenau posted a 9-0 run late to cut the lead down to 15, 70-55 with 2:26 left. But it was Union stretching the final score to 76-57.
In the first half, Union jumped out to 13-4 lead with Sara Chan scoring Union’s first six points. After each team swapped a few baskets, Brenau posted an 8-0 run to cut Union’s lead down to 17-16 with 12:43 left in the half. Union slowly began to stretch their lead out to double figures by closing out the half with a 20-10 run, including an 11-1 run over the final six minutes.
Three other Union players followed Dudley’s 18 points. Sara Chan added 16 points, including 14 in the first half. Ashley Lillard and Christina Ray each scored 10 points. Union shot 47 percent from the field, 17 percent (5-30) from three point range and 50 percent (5-10) from the free throw line.
Ashley Hagana and Nikki Reed led Brenau with 15 and 11 points respectively. The Golden Tigers shot 34 percent from the field, 22 percent (5-23) from behind the arc and 67 percent (8-12) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be their first conference game of the season versus Bethel (Tenn.) University on Thursday, January 7 at Union at 6:00 p.m.
