LEBANON, Tenn. - 1/21/2010 - The No. 18 Union (Tenn.) University Bulldogs lost for the first time in TranSouth play this season in six games with a 71-54 defeat at Cumberland (Tenn.) University. Union is now 5-1 in league play and 14-6 overall. Cumberland improved to 7-12 on the season and 3-3 in the TranSouth.
Union’s leading scorer Greg Truvillion scored a game-high 27 points, including 19 in the first half. Union’s second leading scorer, Stan McNeil scored his only three points on the night with a long range basket in the final minute. Union put two players in double figures, while no other Bulldog scored over three points.
The 54 points scored is the second lowest of the season (50 vs. Campbellsville 11/17/09).
Cumberland scored first in the game but Union tied the game at 2-2 and then again at 4-4. Cumberland took the lead for good 6-4 and continued on a 9-0 run to push their lead to 13-4 with 16:46 left. Truvillion tried to keep Union close as he scored 19 of Union’s first 26 points.
The Bulldogs of Union rallied back to pull to within one point at 21-20 and then 23-22 with 9:51 left in the half. However, a 3-point from Harris Batalevic sparked another run for Cumberland as they outscored Union 14-5 to close out the half with a 37-27 lead.
In the second half, Union quickly cut the deficit down to four at 37-33. But Union’s offense just could not get going. Cumberland slowly worked the lead back to double figures and with 1:24 left, held their largest lead at 69-51. Union’s perfect conference mark came to an end just seconds later, 71-54.
Union was led by Truvillion with 27 points. Samuel Danache added 16. Union shot 43 percent from the field, 22 percent (4-18) from 3-point range and 77 percent (10-13) from the free-throw line.
Cumberland was led by the NAIA’s leading scorer Brandon Springer (23.9 ppg) with 17 points. Lamar Brinkley scored 16 and Lindal Yarbrough added 11 points. Cumberland shot 48 percent from the field, 25 percent (4-16) from behind the arc and 83 percent (15-18) from the free-throw line.
